Visiting Jasper National Park

Jasper National Park is Canada's oldest and largest national park. The weather in Maligne Lake exemplifies Canada's seasons, with summer being the shortest season. Spring lasts from the middle of April to mid-June. July is the warmest month of the year. Many visitors enjoy Jasper National Park in September and October due to the brilliant fall colors mixed with cool temperatures. January is by far the coldest month in the region, but the entire winter season is defined by cold and stormy weather.


Visitors must pay a fee upon entry to the park: adults, $9.80; seniors, $8.30; youth, $4.90; family/group, $19.60. Annual passes are also available for frequent visitors.

Located within Jasper National Park, Maligne Lake has a wide variety of activities that appeal to visitors of all ages. Some of the most popular activities include:


Hiking is a favorite of visitors at Maligne Lake. With a variety of trails, there is a trail for everyone, no matter their needs. Maligne Lake even has a 44km trail, the Skyline Trail, which is by far the most popular. Boasting the highest vistas, hiking the entire trail takes several days and brings hikers from Maligne Lake to the nearby town of Jasper. All of the trails promise unique views of the lake and surrounding area, providing an unforgettable experience and the opportunity to take the pictures to prove it.

Maligne Lake Chalet

Maligne Lake Chalet has been designated as a historical building and gives visitors a chance to walk back in time. Built in the early 1900s, visitors can see what first attracted campers to this area and why it became such a popular place. In addition, the chalet offers a peaceful area to enjoy an afternoon nap or even a picnic with family and friends. Also nearby is the Curly Phillips Boathouse, which is also a historic building, that offers a relaxing place to take in the views.


Relax on the lake by renting a canoe from the Curly Phillips Boathouse. Rowboats and sea kayaks are also available for rental, giving visitors a chance for a self-guided tour of the lake. While out on the water, bring a lunch to take in the rays while enjoying a picnic surrounded by some of the most gorgeous views in the country.

Cross Country Skiing at Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake is just as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer and continues to have a wide variety of activities for all to enjoy. Among these are snowshoeing and cross country skiing, which allow visitors to enjoy a walk on the wild side at their own pace. Tours with experienced guides are available for both activities, which will also teach visitors how to track for animals in the area.

Maligne Wildlife and Waterfalls Tour

This tour takes visitors further into Jasper National Park where they have the opportunity to see and experience the valley, including encounters with bear, wolves, big horn sheep, elk and eagles. The tour also stops at Maligne Canyon, where guests are able to see unforgettable views of waterfalls.

Spirit Cruise

With several cruises daily, visitors are able to enjoy the fresh breeze and mountain views with a spectacular location on the lake. The Spirit Cruise offers a chance to mingle with friends or the opportunity to sit back and enjoy a book while enjoying nature. The cruises are approximately 90 minutes long and give passengers a first-hand tour of Maligne Lake and take them to Spirit Island.

Guided Fishing Tours

Whether you are an experienced angler or a first time fisher, the guided fishing tours will give you a fishing experience like no other. Experience tour guides take guests on Maligne Lake for an opportunity to catch Canada's world-famous trout, including rainbow trout and eastern brook trout. Depending on the tour, lunch is also served. Fishing tours are available for half or full days.

The View Restaurant offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area and is one of the most popular restaurants in Jasper National Park. Take part in a historic tradition at the Maligne Chalet with Afternoon Tea. During the summer months, it is held daily between 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Relive the life of campers who spent the day on horseback and freshened up with tea and conversation.
